It is odd that Photo supports with no real indicators of what exactly an artboard is, but at least it allows you to update them for compatibility. Sprite images are used a lot in webdesign as well. Especially if they are global color swaps.
One spec I used required 80 images and it's very painful to have to open individually and export. You may want to check out more software, such as Magic Photo Editor, Photo-Suit or Affinic Debugger GUI, which might be similar to Affinity Photo.
